“I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding. For I want you to understand what really matters, so that you may live pure and blameless lives until the day of Christ’s return. May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation—the righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christ —for this will bring much glory and praise to God.” (Phil 1:9)
Paul’s prayer for the Philippian church was that we overflow in love, and keep on growing in knowledge and understanding. Not just understanding anything, but things that really matter. The things that matter are the things that enable us to walk upright in His sight – and we are instructed to so this until the day Christ returns. He also goes on to talk about the fruit of our salvation which is the righteous character in our lives through Christ. Galatians 5, also describes the fruit we should have in our lives every day: “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!” (Gal 5:22)
We should be seeking to understand God’s word and to understand all of these things that Christ has given us when we accepted Him. The fruit described is for our good, and should be evident in how we live each day. When we live for Christ, we bring glory to God and when we truly understand this we are blessed. Proverbs tells us “Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding. Cry out for insight, and ask for understanding. Search for them as you would for silver; seek them like hidden treasures. Then you will understand what it means to fear the Lord, and you will gain knowledge of God.” (Prov. 2:2)
Spend time with God and understand Him – you will know His heart for you and will have an experience in life like no other; walking hand in hand with the Master!
