Good Morning Brothers and Sisters, I would like to talk to you today about Storing Up.In life in general the world teaches us to store up stuff.Whether it be treasures, or keep sakes, for our family, or for our retirement. We inadvertently follow along, or get caught up: "keep up with the Joneses!" "Hey dear, I think our house is to small?" Yes honey, I think we need a bigger camper too!"And the list goes on and on.But what about storing UP /\ 🙌, what about Jesus? What about God our father? What are we storing UP!
God says in Ecclesiastes 2: 26 (NIV), “To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind”. Just think about that for a moment...storing up wealth is meaningless!Don't get me wrong I am not against prosperity or providing for the future, but I am trying to get all of us to look at what we are storing, the intent of the heart in regards to our storing. What the purpose is for our storing, will it be of any worth in the eyes of God.
Jesus says in Matt. 6: 19-21 (NIV), “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money”.
There are a couple of points I want to look at in this portion of scripture:
1. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.Remember the rich man in Matthew 19, who came to Jesus and asked what he must do to get eternal life? After receiving the answer, he went away sad, because he could not let go of his great wealth.
2. The eye is the lamp of the body, great! If not healthy, then not so good.I find it interesting that Jesus adds this into the middle of this teaching on storing up, and uses the illustration of our eyes. This re-affirms point one that where our treasure is, or our attention, there our heart will be also.
So, I have to ask this question: "where and what is your focus today? Is it on God, with the goal and focus to follow Jesus where ever he sends you and whatever he asks you to do?Or is it more on ourselves and our futures first and then on the things of God”?
Jesus says in Matt. 12: 35 (NIV), “A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him”.
So when I think of how things were, and how our world is changing before our eyes, I must ask God to check my priorities. I want God’s will to be done in and through my life.Am I truly Storing UP /\ 🙌🙌? I pray that everything you do, every choice you make is pleasing to God.And this brother in the Lord says, " Anchor Up!"
